RF500 Application
KEYWORD/PART NO.

Newsprint Production
Wireless temperature and humidity monitoring

Background

An international news printing group chose Comark’s RF500 Wireless Monitoring as part of a multi-million pound investment in new printing facilities. The new full-colour presses installed were capable of producing 86,000 copies each. One aspect of the upgrade in facilities was the requirement for monitoring humidity and temperature, critical when dealing with paper rolls. Each roll weighs 1.8 tonnes and if the humidity is not monitored, the paper can be too moist for the press and it will tear, costing the production a fortune in ruined paper rolls.

With ability to measure both temperature and humidity, RF513 transmitters were best suited for this application. A continual means to measure moisture levels within the working environment meant that the risk to paper stock was greatly reduced and in the event of levels going out of range, alarms would trigger corrective action being taken by staff. Transmitters were sited far enough away from the presses to prevent electrical and machine noise interfering with the RF signal of the system.

The ability to monitor 24 hours a day, seven days a week without the need for manual checks was perfectly suited to the continual production at this facility. Future development was planned at the site so the system was configured to allow for easy expansion.

Benefits
  • Early warning via alarms if temperature or humidity goes out of range

  • Corrective actions can be taken to prevent loss of paper rolls

  • Reduced production down-time

  • Installation configured for expansion to future-proof further site development
